#3 2005 Off Season / Preseason Power Rankings

If you're just starting to follow Bronczilla's Off Season Power Rankings, the OPENING POWER RANKINGS and #2 POWER RANKGINGS can be read by following those links.

The number in parenthesis represents the number of points each team has. Teams began these power rankings in their first week with a number of points inverse to their standing in the rankings.

For example, the Patriots began as the #1 ranked team, so they started out with 32 points.

Transactions and the number of points granted this week for each transaction are listed beneanth each team's name and ranking.

1. Eagles (31 pts)

2. Steelers (31 pts)

+1 Cutting CB Chad Scott – Opened up a lot of cap space and lost a player that hasn’t been able to come back to form after a knee injury.

+0 Cutting TE Jay Riemersma.

3. Colts (29 pts)

4. Broncos (29 pts)

+0 Releasing OG Dan Neil – I speculated last season that Denver’s main O line woes were the result of failings at the guard positions, Neil is coming off of a knee injury and does anyone really believe he’s the 2nd coming of Mark Schlereth?, the question that keeps this move from being a bigger positive is; who does Denver replace him with?

+1 Trading for DT Gerard Warren -- Making the switch to the 3-4 means that Denver desperately needs a big man who can get pressure on the other team's QB. He had 4.0 sacks last year, just 1.5 off of his best season, and played part of the year recovering from a torn pectoral muscle. This guy is just coming of age and could end up a steal at the price of a 4th round draft pick.

5. San Diego (28 pts)

6. NJ Jets (27 pts)

7. Patriots (26 pts)

+0 Release of CB Ty Law -- Did they seem to miss him after he broke his foot last season?

-1 Release of WR / DB Troy Brown -- May be getting old, but contributed in a big way last season.

8. Green Bay (25 pts)

-1 Release of OG Mike Wahle -- Weakening the O line might be a good way to push QB Brett Favre into retirement (which would make this a -2 move).

9. Falcons (24 pts)

-2 Loss of Alex Gibbs as O line coach – Do you really think Jeff Jagodzinski, previously the team’s TE coach and with five total years NFL coaching experience, is gonna come in and perform miracles where Gibbs found only frustration?

10. Bills (24 pts)

+1 Dumping QB Drew Bledsoe – Drew tosses too damned many INTs, and it’s just plan time to turn things over to JP Lossman.

11. Ravens (23 pts)

+1 Signing WR Derrick Mason -- How much good can an aging, pretty good WR do on a bad offense? +1 is a gift.

12. Seahawks (22 pts)

+0 Releasing WR Jerry Rice.

13. Rams (21 pts)

+0 Signing LB Dexter Coakley -- A solid backup / situational player who improves the team's depth.

14. Chiefs (20 pts)

15. Vikings (19 pts)

+1 Trade of WR Randy Moss for 1st round pick, 7th round pick and LB Napolean Harris -- The Vikes went 8-8 WITH Moss last year and still scored 27 pts a game when he was out, so how much did he really matter to or help them? And the Vikings are in desperate need of defensive help.

16. Jaguars (16 pts)

17. Texans (16 pts)

18. Panthers (14 pts)

-1 Release of WR Mushin Muhammad.

19. Saints (14 pts)

20. Bengals (13 pts)

21. Giants (12 pts)

22. Redskins (12 pts)

+1 Signing C Casey Rabach -- The O line was in desperate need of upgrading. This is a nice start and goes along pretty nicely with the resigning of LT Chris Samuels.

23. Detroit (10 pts)

24. Cardinals (9 pts)

25. Buccaneers (9 pts)

+1 Release of QB Brad Johnson -- Too fragile, too slow, opens things up for Chris Simms to step in as the #2 guy.

+0 Releasing WR Joe Jerivicius -- Talented, a good guy, but can't stay healthy enough to contribute for a full season.

26. Cowboys (9)

+1 Signing QB Drew Bledsoe – Drew’s best days came under Tuna’s wing. Parcell’s knows how to prod the best out of Bledsoe.

27. Bears (5 pts)

+0 Signing WR Mushin Muhammad -- The Bears organization, their lack of a quality OC, QB Rex Grossman’s fragility and Muhammad’s age keep him from adding greater value.

28. Miami (4 pts)

29. Raiders (4 pts)

+0 Trading for WR Randy Moss, for LB Napolean Harris plus 1st and 7th round draft picks – Their D sucked WITH Harris, Norv Turner still has no business leading an NFL team, the O line doesn’t give their QBs enough time to throw and can’t run block worth a damn, they have no RB talent to take heat off of the passing game, their OC (Jimmy Raye) is every bit as good a coach as their HC, Moss’ work ethic is nonexistent.

+2 Restructuring QB Rich Gannon's contract -- Freeing up over 7 million in cap space has to count for something . . . even with the Raiders.

30. Titans (3pts)

-1 Loss of WR Derrick Mason -- A bad offense just got worse, with little hope of making up the loss.

31. Browns (2)

32. 49ers (1 pts)
